30 Days of Biking in April

Join me in taking the 30 days of Biking pledge.

Spring riding isn’t always pretty. Sometimes it involves getting wet and lost. See photos below! But I like that it’s not yet about speed or even about distance. Spring riding feels adventurous to me. I just feel happy to be out there.

In these pandemic times, more people are choosing to ride. Like running it’s one of the things we can do for exercise that is consistent with social distancing. I was sad to see that Spain and Italy banned recreational cycling though it’s still okay to use a bike to get to the grocery store or the doctors.

Here’s some photos of an early spring ride that Sarah and I did a few years ago. We got lost, we ended up taking our good road bikes through some mud. It was a definite adventure.

Streak interrupted but still going strong

My bike streak was interrupted this weekend when travel to London to see a concert and help my daughter move made cycling impossible but I’m back at it. Yesterday was warm, grey and snowy and today was bright and cold. Both have their charms but after the greyest November on record  I’ll take the cold and the sun.

I am not the sort of person who thinks after breaking my streak “that’s it, it’s over.” I’m more a “back at it” kind of person. I wasn’t not going to go see Mallory’s Christmas concert. And I’ve got a bunch of streak days ahead. I’ve got spinning classes on campus, my bike on a trainer in my home office, and my bike commute. 

I love riding at this time of year. It feels so good to be moving outside. I used to love winter running for the same reason.

Streaking Sam Style

I’ve had some great holiday running streaks. See here and here and here.

But I’ve said a sad goodbye to running. I still struggle see here. When Running World put out their annual call to streak, I shared it on our Facebook page and said I wouldn’t be joining in.

What’s the #RWRunStreak?
The rules are simple: Run at least one mile per day, every day, starting on Thanksgiving (November 22) and ending on New Year’s Day (January 1). That’s 41 consecutive days of running.

And then it hit me. I could do a bike version. Ride everyday from November 22 to January 1. I laid out my winter options here.

I’m going to count riding outside (obviously) but also spin classes and riding on the bike trainer. 41 days in a row of riding over the holidays. I’m in.
