Making Space 2024: December 8

Hello, hello!

Welcome to Day 8!

How did things go with your Weekend Fun Plan?

Did you fit it into your day yesterday?

Do you have it planned for today?

Did it have to be rescheduled?

Did you have to change it in any way?

Did you manage to have some fun no matter what?

Personally, I had to shift my WFP a little and do parts of the craft yesterday and then finish it today.

Breaking it into two parts was actually a space-making move for me because I was tired yesterday and didn’t have the focus I needed to do the more detailed parts of the project.

If I had pushed myself to keep going, it wouldn’t have felt like I was creating space, I would have felt rushed and cranky.

And, obviously, those are not the feelings I was going for!

Anyway, I hope your WFP worked out/is working out the way you need/needed it to and that you were kind to yourself in the process.

Actually, I would like you to be kind to yourself in every process but that, in itself, is something that takes a lot of practice!

Speaking of processes and practice, our movement practice for today is a 10 Minute Full Body Pilates Workout with Jessica Valent.

Remember that the key here is to take a few minutes for movement – you can adapt her movements, just do a few, or you can do something else entirely.

You are the boss of you!

Still image description shows the instructor outside on a sunny day, lying on a blue mat in a grassy field surrounded by trees. She is in exercise clothes and she is extending one leg along the ground while the other one is extended toward the sky and she is holding onto the calf of her raised leg. Her face is toward the camera and she’s smiling.

And today’s mindfulness practice is a short meditation that National Center on Health, Physical Activity, and Disability in the US created for National Relaxation Day (August 15) a couple of years ago.

Still image is of waves crashing against a rocking shore on a sunny day.

Whether you do these videos or something else entirely, I hope you find space and ease today, and always.

  1. Thanks for all these ideas! I actually tend to have enough time…most of the time. I just thought I’d pass along a story of a time there was simply no opportunity to pause. A brief but chaotic time.

To set the scene, I live in California, so winter is somewhat warmer than much of the springtime in Canada.

Today, I came across a tiny hummingbird on the ground. I wasn’t sure it was alive, but it seemed worth trying to bring it back if it was. I carried it home and stirred some sugar into water & held its little bill in the liquid. I gave it a rest & tried some more. Surely I was seeing more movement? Yes. I kept trying. I remembered a neighbor who feeds hummingbirds & she came over with a feeder & a syringe so we could offer the food more effectively. It eventually figured out it REALLY liked that syringe; it figured out how to find the opening & slurp away. It still wasn’t strong enough to fly away, so we kept working. Suddenly, it flew up to the ceiling (it was ok, the neighbor has a butterfly net, too!). We caught it, and, at the wildlife rescue place’s recommendation, settled it in a dark, soft, quiet box for the night. We’ll feed it in the morning & fully expect it to hurry away as soon as we think it’s strong enough to take off.

I was very ready for a bit of down time after that (and a more ordinary long day). A good dinner, a long, hot bath, and a chance to record a memory of this experience.

Some days just aren’t plannable. Occasionally, that’s actually pretty good!

    1. Oh, wow. That was an interesting type of unplannable day. Rescuing that little bird was such a lovely thing to do and it was definitely a time for quick action!

Wishing ease for you and for your feathered friend.

      Thanks for reading my post!

      1. Yes, it was a great way to have my time rearranged without my input! I am happy to report that our little friend flew off into the sunrise this morning.
