What to wear on a bike: bib shorts or regular cycling shorts? (reblog)

HI folks– I’m traveling today and instead of writing a new post, I’ve been packing and watering plants and trying to clean out my fridge, etc. This post was one I wrote ten years ago (whoa) about a little-known cycling clothing controversy: bib shorts or regular cycling shorts? I won’t issue any spoilers, but ten years later I’m much more casual about what I wear on a bike; still, it’s good to have options and information.

So, herewith my post from 2015 on the case for (and against) bib shorts for cycling.

See you all with a new post soon.

  1. Ok, I get your idea. Most of my bike buddies go for bibs. For whatever reason, though, I just find plain shorts more comfortable. They seem to fit well enough that they don’t creep around much. Maybe it’s also my aging skin? These days I really prefer liner shorts with regular (not bicycling) shorts over them. Or my oldest, softest, most broken-down chamois pad shorts. I guess I ride enough, 3 or 4000 miles a year, that pressure is not a problem. But chafing is, and it’s not getting better as time passes. So maybe bibs aren’t for me because I don’t have an option of less chamois.

I wish, wish, wish that with all the fancy choices cyclists have, we could also have chamois pads in sizes. Little (5’1″) old (73) me would sure appreciate that!

    Enjoy your travels!
