Nat hits menopause at fifty

I have the date marked on my calendar, January 20, 2025 will be one year since my last menstruation. Happy Menopause Day!

Previously the longest I had gone between periods was 144 days in 2023. I thought it would linger more. I wondered if my journey would be like Cate’s?

Cate is 53 and a half

I’m ready to throw out the much valued, but now crumpled at the back of my drawer, absorbent and leak proof underwear. Thank you for your many years of service!

Nat tries wearing these comfy, leakproof underwear as a hat or face covering. She looks silly and that is the point.

But wait!

When talking of tossing my tired trinnies into the trash some trusted tub-thumpers offered that leak proof underwear are:

– great on colonoscopy prep days

– handy for unexpected periods

– very useful for bladder incontinence

So maybe I’ll hang on to my padded unmentionables for a wee bit.

I’ll be finding homes for the boxes of paper supplies, aside from a courtesy sampling I’ll keep on hand for guests. Feminists keep period supplies on hand and visible for our visitors. You never know when someone might get caught short!

My hot flashes have largely abated. My mood is feeling more even keeled. It’s nice to be, well, done with having periods.

I got my first period at 13. Here is to being officially in menopause, it’s about damn time!

  1. Congrats! I actually had my last period when I was 55 and since it was Covid and I was hot flashing like the devil i accelerated my official menopause by starting to take HRT when I was still having periods every three months. It’s a different world over here lol.

  2. Congratulations. But, yes, there may still be a surprise period. I went 15 months and then had one. None since. Got checked by dr out of abundance of caution with post 12 month period but not uncommon when you talk to others.
Also my moods are not as up and down maybe and I never really had terrible hot flashes. But some lingering feelings of despair seem to have maybe gotten worse now that I am almost 2 years in to menopause. Happy to be done with the regular periods too. Mine started a month after I turned 11 and were a handful for years. Bye!
