Saying goodbye to my sentimental socks

Tracy and I are playing the minimalism game.

Find a friend or family member. Someone who’s willing to get rid of some of their excess stuff. This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day of the month. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day.

So far, just 4 days in, I’m concentrating on the contents of my cycling bureau. (Yes, I have an entire bureau devoted to cycling clothing and paraphernalia.) Yes, I have my good cycling gloves. But I probably don’t need 3 old pairs. One back up old pair is probably enough. So they went off to the home of a beginning cyclist. Hi Anita! I threw out some old cycling socks too.

I’m stuck though on stuff to which I’m sentimentally attached, like my first ever pair of cycling socks. They even say 2002 right on them! They’re too thin to actually ever use and they’re not particularly fancy looking. But for now, I’m hanging on to them.

  1. I love this idea! I still have way too much stuff even after moving interstate and purging a lot of excess things. And yes – so many sentimental things I don’t use and definitely don’t like anymore. And sports kit that fit me 5kg ago (down, not up) that I might not ever fit into again. All. Must. Go!! I might even do it without a friend.

    1. Seriously, I think I have 7 pairs of jeans, of which I wear 2, and neither of those fit well. (I have a good figure for skirts).

  2. Here is part of my solution: I divide and store my cycling clothing in 2 different homes which are in 2 different cities. So yea, when I take the plane, I don’t have to pack much clothing.

And I have a bike (and more) at each of these cities. And helmets in each city.
Yes, I still have wearable, decent looking cycling jerseys from….15 yrs. ago. I wear them several times annually or more.

To make this all work, is to say approx. same weight year after year. Yea, sure by cycling and other exercise, etc. 🙂

The only thing I buy are gloves (they need replacing every few years), tights.
