Today though it’s -10 C and I’m feeling extra grumpy, especially with the internet.
First, there’s all those “you’re doing it wrong” articles. Heck, turns out I can’t even eat an apple right! See 11 Ways You’ve Been Eating Your Food All Wrong.
Second, I hate the tone of articles like this one, 9 Ridiculously Simple Things All Women Should Be Doing For Their Health,
Subtitle: But we don’t because we’re morons?
If you want to care about your health, yes. If you’d rather not that’s okay too. (See Healthism, fitness, and the politics of respectability.)
But even if you do care about your health, and I care lots about mine, the tone of that article drives me bonkers.
Get more rest! In the bathroom if necessary!
Getting enough sleep is essential for good health in many, many ways, and there is no replacement for it. But even after nights when you’re up with a deadline or a screaming infant, giving yourself just a quick break the next day can make a real difference in your overall wellbeing — and you don’t even have to close your eyes. “My advice, as a provider, is to give yourself time to rest. Give yourself time to be reflective,” said Cooper.
Think you can’t fit it in? While not necessarily the sexiest of tips, Cooper has a suggestion: “I say, ‘When you go to the bathroom, don’t let that be the only thing you do. Sit for a few seconds longer, and be alone … use that as an opportunity to sit in solitude and think about what’s going on in your life.'”
I’m cheering up though because today is supposed to be our last day with below zero temperatures! Whee! Bring on the sun! We need it.
