Morning Rituals,  #Daily WritingPrompt

What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?

Confession: Morning rituals are aspirational for me. In the first hour of the day, I listen to the CBC news and weather, often in bed. I drink coffee and eat breakfast. I peek at my email to make sure nothing has exploded. Then, I shower and get dressed. That’s pretty much an hour.

It’s true that some mornings I ride my bike on the trainer. One morning a week at least, we’re at the gym bright and early. These activities squish the activities in the first paragraph into under an hour and maybe the shower comes after. But there’s no routine or ritual about it, more of a mad rush.

What I’d like to add: A morning mobility and stretching routine and a quick walk with Cheddar. May 5th is my first Monday back in the Dean’s office. That’s my start date. Wish me luck!

My son and I were just chatting about fitness influencer Ashton Hall’s wild morning routine. Have you seen it?

Want to read about it? Here’s this from the Toronto Star: Push-ups at 4 a.m., banana peel face-rubs and ice-water dunks — I’m exhausted just thinking about Ashton Hall’s bizarre morning routine.

How about you? Do you have a morning ritual or routine?

Here’s puppy Cheddar in the morning.

  1. Your morning routine sounds delightfully relatable—coffee, CBC, and a ‘did the world explode?’ email check is my vibe too ☕. Ashton Hall’s 4 AM push-ups made me side-eye my snooze button, but hey, balance, right?

If streamlining those morning verifications (you know, the endless SMS codes) would help carve out time for Cheddar’s walk, tools like receive SMS online free temporary phone number can keep your personal number clutter-free.

P.S. Cheddar’s morning pic just upgraded my serotonin levels. Good luck on May 5th—you’ve got this!

  2. That article is hilarious! I have never heard of that guy, but I suspect his routine will turn out to be anything but healthy.

Personally, my favorite t-shirt reads, “No Pain, No Pain.” Having said that, I will add that my activities might seem extreme to many people. Many hours of cycling; a little bit of running; some strength training; yoga. Then, just for fun, quite a bit of walking – often doubles as birdwatching, which may average less than 1 mile per hour – and about 5 hours a week of tap dance & jazz dance classes.

But I am retired. The only hard stuff I do is running, and bike intervals & climbs. No ice water (other than maybe drinking some on a hot day), no dietary restrictions or other quirks. Definitely nothing that might be considered body-building.

My morning routine? Do Wordle, get up for a big breakfast, maybe yoga, maybe a nice, gentle walk with others in my community, more socializing than exercise. Then, I am ready for the actual exercise. Or reading, or catching up on my email, as I am doing right now.

  3. I have a “most mornings” ritual of 10 mins of meditation and 15 mins of morning pages. And, it’s incredibly rare that happens all 7 days of the week. I’m with everyone that the influencer morning routine sounds ridiculous for most people. And, I have done the face plunge into a bowl of ice water as a practice a few times to calm/reset the nervous system in times of high stress and it is remarkably effective. So, I wouldn’t throw that baby out with the bathwater.
