Thanks Strava. It’s been awhile.
I lost most of my London QOMs in 2020. There are still two standing and one is shared with the blog’s Kim Solga. We tied on New Sarum North to the 401! I announced plans for some Guelph QOMs but I never did get them, though it looks like I do have one bike path QOM. Mostly though my knee surgeries got in the way of my QOM plans.
So I thought my QOM days were over!
Until yesterday!
The one I just got is through my neighbourhood. There’s a limit to how fast you want to push. Sometimes there are children and dogs. There’s a basketball hoop in the street, and often university students are playing. I won’t even mention the two stop signs and the speed bumps. Shhh!
It’s a segment I created. I called it “almost home.” It’s the last bit of road long enough for a segment before our house.
I’m sure I won’t hold it for long. I likely will always be the local legend. I’ve ridden it more than 100 times. And many more, since lots of my trips through that segment are on my Brompton with no Garmin.
What’s a QOM anyway?
“KOM or QOM Crown: If you achieve the fastest time on a segment, you’ll receive a special crown, meaning that you are the KOM or QOM of that segment (acronyms stand for King of the Mountain and Queen of the Mountain). This crown is awarded at the time of upload if you are at that time the leader on the segment. Since Achievement Awards do not refresh in real time, even if someone later beats your time, you will still be able to see the gold crown on that activity page.
Your KOM/QOM crowns are stored in a special list on Strava for your reference. “My KOMs” or “My QOMs” is a page stored under “KOMs/CRs” or “QOMs/CRs” accessed from your Profile page. It will keep a current list of all the KOMs or QOMs you currently hold.
Note: if you tie for a KOM/QOM, you will not be awarded the KOM/QOM crown, and the crown will not be recorded in the “My KOMs/QOMs” list”
