Highlights
Whee! Zoom! May was another happy, busy month that just flew by.
It might be my new favourite month. As temperatures warm I think my favourite month is now May rather than June. I’m no longer a fan of the super hot months of July and August.
The month began with a trip to Winnipeg to judge the National Ethics Bowl. The Ethics Bowl is pretty special because it’s inspiring to meet all of these ethically engaged high school students and their teacher/coaches. It makes me feel a bit better about the world. It’s held in the National Museum of Human Rights which is also a fitting location.
In May we also had two big active weekends away–a visit to see my youngest child who is working inside Algonquin Park and a camping trip to the Pinery with bikes.
Weekend One: Sarah, mum, and I went with three dogs northeast to Algonquin Park to visit my youngest son. We stayed in the Bongo Cabins and did an awful lot of hiking. I was very impressed with my mum’s hiking ability. She made it through some tricky trails. All in all, a pretty relaxing weekend with lots of walks and family time.
Weekend Two: I’m more of a back country canoe camper than I am a car camper, but I love The Pinery. I have very fond memories of being here every summer with the kids when they were little. The beach is beautiful and it’s a great place to ride bikes. We got two good rides in, one around the park on the fun trails and one into Grand Bend for dinner. Check out the palace tent we borrowed from my middle kid. You can stand up in it even. It’s a big change from our tiny lightweight tent. We also brought real pillows, sheets, and blankets!

I’m at 180, mostly thanks to twice weekly physio sessions, twice weekly personal training sessions, dog walking, bike commuting, and Zwift.

Books
I liked, but didn’t love, the last two books I read. I picked The Power based on really liking The Future. A mistake as it turns out. The Future has a lot of humour and The Power does not. Also the Power has a few too many torture scenes and too much gore and violence. The Day was beautifully written but I didn’t love it. I didn’t connect with the characters and maybe, just maybe, it’s too soon for me to read a serious novel set in our actual pandemic.
I loved The Bee Sting by Paul Murray and Just Kids by Patti Smith, which are books I read earlier this year, and now I’m looking for recommendations. Send them my way!
