Sam’s monthly check-in: How did January go anyway?

ADVENTURES

“Adventure” is my Word of the Year but I confess that January hasn’t felt very adventurous. I did fly to New York, so there’s that, and I’ve been getting a lot in fitness-wise, but mostly it’s felt like a month of planning adventures rather than adventuring (in the spirit of Christine’s Planuary). I’ve been browsing tickets for Rome this summer with a stopover in Iceland. I’ve been looking for a place to live in Dunedin, NZ, for a month next winter while I’m on my mini-research leave. And then there’s the weekend bike packing plans for this summer.

What a year, huh. Girl, it’s January.

24 in 2024

Here’s my list of 24 things I want to do in 2024.

10, 18, 19, and 23! You’ll have to go look.

BOOKS

I might have read the best books of 2024 (for me) in January! Both were audiobooks.

I loved Patti Smith’s memoir of her life with Robert Mapplethorpe. That accent, that voice, but most of all, those words.

And Sea of Tranquility, shifting time, and storylines were beautiful and engaging.

Two books isn’t a lot, but it sets me up well for my 2024 goal.

224 in 2024

Our workout accountability group/tracking group continues on and I’m at close to 40 workouts so far. At that rate I’ll hit 480 but it won’t happen. The numbers are so high because of Adriene’s 30 Day Flow series, and of course, physio.

Here’s RIDE, from Day 19. It was one of my favourites.

If you didn’t do FLOW in January, you can always do it February. Or over February, March, and April. Really it’s up to you!

A mnemonic

WRITING

I’ve committed to daily writing, and I am writing every day, but I feel like I just need to be more organized about it. January feels like it ought to be a good writing month. But for some reason, that never works.

It literally feels like January 74th.

PHYSIO

Great news on the physio front. I’m just about ready to graduate. Okay, maybe not graduate but I’m down from physio twice a week to once a week. I’ve got good strength, mobility, and balance. My extension and flexion are both good. I’d like more flexion than I’ve got, and I’m still working on it. Likely, I’ll go back in and check in monthly until it’s been a year since my second surgery. That’s April 11th.

WALKING

The really good news in January was walking. Wow! I went to New York for the APA and arrived early to enjoy some music and theatre and time with New York friends and I was super happy with how much I could walk. I logged more than 5 km a day and one night even hopped on the subway–not because of knee pain, but instead because of a biting cold wind. It was fabulous. Even going down the subway steps with luggage didn’t do me in.
