The worst is over! (If it’s evening light you’re missing most)

The worst of the winter dark is behind us now. At least for those of who care about early evening dark and the distribution of daylight, things are getting better.

Yes, Winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year isn’t quite here. The days aren’t getting longer yet. But the earliest dark is past.

In London the earliest sunset was at 4:50 pm. That was a few days ago. From here on in it’s getting later. More light! But not more light overall. That doesn’t happen until the Winter Solstice.

How can that be? See here.

For those who care about light mornings, Winter Solstice is no reprieve. Though the shortest day is on or close to 21 December, the earliest sunset is the first week of December and the latest sunrise does not occur until 2 January, so at Christmas the mornings are still getting darker whilst the evenings are getting lighter.

  1. I can’t wait for winter to be over and to catch some light again! I’m definitely affected by winter depression, I even wrote about it lol. What I don’t understand is why we have to do the time shift robbing ourselves another hour of sunlight.
