Sam is Planning Next Summer’s Big Rides

1. First up is the NYC Five Boro Tour. It’s 40 miles, 5 boros, 1 day and 0 cars. I’m excited. I’ve wanted to do this for a few years but it requires organization. Registration sells out fast. This year, I set the alarms and filled out the forms on time.

“On the first Sunday in May, 32,000 cyclists of all skill levels come from around the world to roll through every borough of New York City on streets totally free of cars. For one day, the roads are yours, the bridges are yours, the City is yours—there’s no better way to experience the Big Apple. Produced in conjunction with the City of New York, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour Presented by REI is the largest charitable bike ride in the U.S., with proceeds funding our free bike education programs. Last year alone, we taught bike skills to more than 17,000 kids and adults. When you ride with Bike New York, you’re helping us in our mission to empower more New Yorkers to grab life by the handlebars.”

2. Kincardine isn’t a big ride but it’s one I’ll train for. I’m doing the duathlon: run 3 km, bike 12 km, run 3 km. A bunch of us bloggers are doing the event in either the duathlon or triathlon versions: Cate, Moira, Tara, Susan, Susan, Sarah, and me. Whee! See you there July 8, 2017!

3. The Bike Rally is huge. It’s a big commitment both in terms of training and in terms of fundraising. Six days of riding, more than 600 km. Sponsor me here! Val and Vanessa are riding again. So’s David. Sarah and Joh are doing the one day version.

“The Bike Rally originated as a 6-day, 600 km bike ride from Toronto to Montréal. In 2016, the Bike Rally introduced a 1-day, 108 km bike ride from Toronto to Port Hope. Now in its 18th year, the Bike Rally has engaged over 3400 participant as cyclists and crew and has raised over $15 million dollars for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA). The Bike Rally is the sustaining fundraiser for PWA supporting its ability to provide critical services and support to individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto.”

That’s July 30 to August 4, 2017.

4. Three Port Tour: August 19, Southwestern Ontario’s best ride along the beautiful Lake Erie Shoreline. 160-100-50km routes. A route by cyclists, for cyclists. Also lots of women, Organizers say it’s about 35% women which is better than the usual bike ride.

See www.threeporttour.com.

Here we are last year,

3 Port Tour 2016

5. Or I’ll do the TriAdventure with Cate. I’m nervous about the fundraising commitment and about the running bit.

6. I’ve done the Gran Fondo in Milton four times before. Hard to resist those hills. Last year I decided not to do it and then got free passes. It’s September 10. Def. weather depending. No more riding up and down really big hills in shivery rain.

That’s an event in May, July, August, and September. Anything else you’d add to the list?

  1. I’m doing the 5 Boro’s as well this year…will see you there. Nice to think about the summer rides with this winter weather.

  2. I’m doing the 5 Boros again this year will see you there. Nice to plan summer rides in this weather…I’m thinking about the Manitoulin Ride in June and doing Quebec Petit train du Nord again with friends.

  3. The fundraising (and being able to get a day off work so soon after Bike Rally) is the only thing that has me not signed up for Triadventure again. It’s a really great event, and quite low key. Even though I planned to do the swim instead of the run, I found myself regretting that I didn’t have any suitable shoes for at least a walk of one lap (about 5km) of the run course.

  4. FYI, I loved the 5 Boro but given the number of riders it is more of a bike walk than a ride. Whatever you do, don’t fall. Ragbrai is on my list to do sometime…
