Sam is Switching Gears for Fall, Are You?

I work with a cycling coach. Actually, that sounds odd but maybe I wrote it that way because it just sounds better than saying more simply, I pay a cycling coach and he sends me a monthly training plan and checks in on my progress on a weekly basis. See I love having a cycling coach.

The reason that’s relevant is that I just looked at October and noticed some seasonal changes. I’m weight training again. And running. And cycling less often. In October it’s not the temperatures that put me off, it’s the lack of daylight. Australian cyclists train in the dark but not very many people here do and I hate to ride alone.

Also, I’m putting my canoe away soon. Sigh.

But on the plus side, I’m also hoping to make it regularly to Aikido this fall, though that’s not part of the official plan.

And then there’s the fun random stuff: boxing when I’m in Toronto, maybe more axe throwing, cyclocross riding…

I’m hoping the running goes well. I love running in the cooler weather.

How about you? Any seasonal changes in what you do for fun and fitness?

  1. I’m back to swimming with my Master’s club in a pool (though I haven’t abandoned the lake, it will get harder to do long distances). I have also started my dance classes after their summer hiatus. I will continue to commute by bike until the snow falls.

  2. So grateful to have a well lit train for morning runs. Trying to squeeze in hikes before the temps drop below freezing. Looking forward to looking forward to the hot yoga room!

  3. Here in Virginia it’s almost cool enough to enjoy being outside, but I’m moving to Lake Tahoe in a week so I feel like I will be missing fall entirely this year. It’s okay though because I’m so excited about a change of location and lifestyle.

It’s a bit of an impromptu move but it has been a loooong-term dream of mine to move to the mountains so I can ski more than one week a year. I just never could decide Which mountains. Then I visited Tahoe in July and I not only fell in love with the beauty and opportunities to do all the outdoorsy stuff I love, I also found a place to rent where my business can occupy one floor and I can live in an apartment downstairs. And it’s waterfront and 7 miles from Squaw Valley.

So about 6 weeks ago I made a decision to go for it and now I’m packing up after being in the South for 11 years. Missing fall here makes me sad, but the shortening daylight hours always limit activities long before the weather stops being nice, and I have two ski resort season passes waiting for me come November.

    1. There’s fall in Lake Tahoe! I was there in late September for my birthday one year and it was beautiful. Living in NC at the beach I truly miss the fall! No mountains here, no trees changing color that lasts for weeks. It’s like one weekend the winds blow in and then you’re in “winter”.

      1. This is true, but not the absolutely
-perfect-weather-so-glad-we-survived-summer fall I’ve gotten used to. Going from 90s to 30s will be a bit of a shock.

  4. I love your question because it really got me thinking…I am outside enjoying lots of physical activity during the warm and cool months. But I tend to hibernate during the winter and only workout at the gym. Although, I enjoy weight training in all seasons, I need to get my butt outside during the winter!
