Worst race ideas ever? How about “Indian Attack”?

I like fun runs. Life doesn’t need to be all serious. Colour runs, zombie runs, mud runs. All fun.

I love the idea of Toronto’s Santa Speedo run.

But some runs seem to me to me a bad idea. A very bad idea.

I’ve written before about the Prison break run. And about the skirt chaser.

Add to the list of very bad running ideas this one: running from the Indians.

In celebration of its colonial history, a city in Kentucky will host a 5K run where Native American reenactors painted in redface will chase runners into an imitation fort, according to reports.
The “James Ray 5K Indian Attack” is scheduled for August 15 as one part of the annual Pioneer Days celebration weekend in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The race is named after General James Ray who relocated to Kentucky from North Carolina in 1775. Ray was reportedly an Indian fighter and spy.

It’s not hard to find a 5K race in this area. Most weekends, especially at this time of year, there is at least one local road race.

However, it’s not every day you can find a 5K — or any race — where American Indians reenactors will chase you to the finish line. Yet that’s exactly what you’ll get Aug. 15 at the James Ray 5K — Indian Attack in Harrodsburg.

Really.

  1. Ugh, I can’t believe that multiple people thought this was a good idea. Nothing like this better be happening in my state, ever!

  2. Whoa. Most of the “party runs” that I’ve looked at, which focus on advertising to women, seem relatively innocuous compared to this “post”-racist idiocy. I am not a fan of 5K runs turned oversimplified historical reenactments. What’s next…Genocide runs? To me, party runs seem quintessentially white, middle class, and hetero, so I say we stick to naked christmas 5ks and keep the cultural damage/appropriation to a minimum. https://fitisafeministissue.com/2016/08/15/party-runs-guest-post/
